Our favorite new wedding trends have officially arrived. From colorful smoke bomb exits to regal fashion statements, these 20 fresh ideas are taking over. by Lauren Kay

"Today’s weddings are all about creating an event to remember—for both the couple and their guests," says Kristen Maxwell Cooper, editor in chief of The Knot. In short? Personalization all the way. From "I do" to favors and everything in between, there are so many ways to personalize your celebration and create unforgettable experiences. Get inspired by these few selections from the 20 new wedding trends we're obsessing over right now for 2019. Look out—you’re about to see these standout details all over the place.

1. Smoke Bomb Exits; Sure, we always love a good sparkler exit, but the new send-off is a riot of color: smoke bombs. These fun props leave a cloud of dreamy pigment in their wake, which makes for otherworldly photos (and very impressed guests). Match the smoke to your wedding hues or opt for a standout rainbow backdrop. The only caveat: This farewell is best captured during daylight hours.

2. All-Out Invites; The bigger and more unique the better—whether it's boxed correspondence or a video message from the to-be-weds, invitations set the stage for an epic party. Typography is leading the charge as the chicest design detail, and illustrations of nontraditional venues (remote campsite, historic house and more) continue to trend.

7. Themes and Vibes; Wedding colors still have a place in décor planning, but the idea of having an entire wedding theme or “vibe” is starting to upstage the basic color palette. Instead of a color scheme, a favorite book or TV show may dictate the look of the day (Game of Thrones lovers rejoice), while a feeling could prevail (retro or high-energy dance party, anyone?).

11. Out-of-the-Box Venues; Breweries have replaced wineries as the trendiest wedding venues. And while barns and lofts are still trending, distilleries, ranches and greenhouses are gaining popularity too.

We had a wedding pro break down the tricks to a packed dance floor.

Hire an experienced pro.

Though it may seem like a DJ is a DJ, Leggitt insists that it's crucial to choose one with plenty of wedding experience. Having stood behind the turntables at more than 1,000 events since 1992, Leggitt knows that there's a big contrast between being in the club and working a wedding. "It's a different animal," explains the pro. "You're dealing with a wider age range of people so you've got to be super, super versatile."

Make sure they've got the goods.

Study the company's reviews. The mix-master you want to go with will have received tons of glowing reports from previous clients. Another good test: Try asking them how they deal with a timid crowd. Leggitt's go-to is to call all the women out on the floor by "playing a song like, 'I Will Survive' or 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody'" he says. "From there, I have all the girls go out and grab any guy they want and, boom, your dance floor is packed." Notes the pro, "There are a bunch of little tricks of the trade that you can do to keep things going without being obnoxious."

Top 5 Wedding Trends for 2018

With 2018 in full swing and busy season right around the corner, it’s time to dive into the top wedding trends couples will be requesting this year. We have the inside scoop from Jeffra Trumpower, WeddingWire’s Associate Director of Content and Creative Services, on the top five trends you can expect to see pop up. Many of these trends may come as a surprise, as couples begin to stray away from the “traditional” and opt for the “unconventional”.

Metallics, marbles and geometrics

So maybe this one doesn’t come as a total surprise, but the biggest decor trend from 2017 will be a highlight yet again for 2018 weddings. Metallics, specifically gold-toned metallics, are still in! Smaller metallic decor pieces, such as votives and charger plates, are as popular as ever because they are small enough to be understated, yet still manage to pack a huge punch overall. Not only do metallics add an extra layer of “umph” to any look, but metallics are a great way to help make everything look and feel more luxe.

Couples are also choosing metallic pieces with geometric shapes to make their wedding feel more modern. Geometric shapes provide a cool break between the ultra-softness and romance of floral elements. Stone elements, such as marble pieces, are also being utilized for the same reason. We don’t care if this is a repeat trend, we love it and are happy to see these favorites stick around!

Keeping it casual


Weddings are becoming more of a casual affair, believe it or not! Younger couples have been choosing to go for a more laid-back route during their wedding festivities. In what might be the biggest departure from “traditional” style weddings, casual affairs have been trending because they are “no fuss”. Guests are able to feel more at ease and couples have less to worry about on their big day. Ultimately, comfort and simplicity are the main goal of casual weddings, and we think they look great!

Grooms and groomsmen have arguably kicked off the casual trend, as the popularity of less formal male attire started popping up more and more. However, this year, casual groom attire is set to take off. Expect to see less suit coats, more unconventional shoes, and even silly socks on grooms. Females have also begun to adopt more casual styles, too. Brides in particular have opted for more natural, effortless hairstyles for their big day as opposed to the previously popular ultra-sophisticated updo.

Formal styles aren’t the only thing to disappear in 2018. Formal traditions are also becoming less popular with millennial couples. Sorry Mom and Dad, but it looks like the Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dances are quickly fading! Revered traditions like these dances, and even couple send offs (particularly involving sparklers) are now starting to be seen as “outdated” and “cliche” by millennial couples. While it may be sad to see some old traditions go, know that couples are opting to nix certain elements in order to replace them with their own creative and new traditions.

Outdoor space

Couples love outdoor weddings! Outdoor venues have always been popular with our couples, but their popularity is only expected to grow. Garden venues, followed by barn venues, are the most popular places amongst couples for their wedding celebrations. Even though the warmer summer months still make up “prime season”, more and more couples have been hosting fall weddings. As a matter of fact, 1 in 3 couples now get married in the fall, and nearly 15% of all weddings take place in October. In many locations, Autumn weather is still perfect for an outdoor celebration, if not cozy. So too, nature’s seasonal change provides the most beautiful backdrop for photos. With the ever-increasing popularity of outdoor venues, your calendars are bound to be filled with outdoor bookings this year!

Outta Phone Space - Here are some tips... March 13th, 2018

You used to get around 12GB of space on a 16GB iPhone, which simply isn’t enough for most people, so we were pleased when Apple bumped up the storage in the basic model of the iPhone 7 to 32GB. The company took things a step further with the introduction of the iPhone 8, which starts at 64GB. That’s a decent amount of room to grow into, but photos, music, and mysterious files can eat up all the space before you know it. That’s why, whatever model you have, it’s good to know how to free up space on your iPhone.

The first place to check when you’re running low on space is Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The bar at the top allows you to see how much storage is being used and what is using it at a glance. Different categories — including Apps, Mail, Photos, Messages, and Other — are color-coded.

Downsize your apps and games list

If you scroll down in Settings > General > iPhone Storage, you can see which apps and games are using the most space. The list is organized with the largest at the top, and listed beneath each entry is the last time you used it. If you click on an app, you’ll find a breakdown of the app size and the size of the documents and data associated with it.

The Wedding Trends to Keep and Ditch in 2018

" The year’s biggest trend: I think the biggest wedding trend will be couples moving to more modern, clean, and minimal wedding styles. From stationery that is not filled with loopy calligraphy to minimal table designs, I think the trend coming up will be a less-is-more approach to the wedding. I do not want people to think that a minimal approach means we are doing away with installs or thinking outside of the box for decor, but I think couples will invest in a few more magical things, rather than multiple, less special things."

Traditional Wedding Toast Order

  1. The best man toasts the bride.

  2. The maid/matron of honor toasts the groom.

  3. The wedding host/financier (traditionally the father of the bride) toasts the couple.

  4. Other parental figures of the couple toast the couple.

  5. The couple toasts their family and guests.

When Are the Toasts? In formal wedding ceremonies, toasts are given immediately following the meal, before the first dance as husband and wife. This can be done either before or after the cutting of the cake. For less formal affairs, toasts can occur after the first dance, as the first course is served, or virtually any time that feels right to you. Just be sure to have a finalized order of events so everyone is on the same page.

The rehearsal dinner is a perfect supplementary opportunity for toasts and speeches. Traditionally, this is when the groom's father gets to toast. This is also a great time for anyone not slated for a reception toast to speak—after all, the rehearsal dinner is only for those directly involved in the wedding, and a beautiful way to pay intimate tribute to the couple. It's no wonder that these toasts can be impromptu, long, and even more emotional than the reception's.

7 Tips and Examples for a Tasteful Wedding Toast

  1. Tactfully get the crowd's attention. Clinking away at a champagne glass is great when it's noticed, but unfortunate and annoying when the crowd is having too much fun to hear it. Stand up, speak calmly into the microphone, and you won't waste time trying to get everyone to listen up.
    Example: "Hello everyone! May I please have your attention for just a few brief, heartfelt moments as we toast the lovely bride and groom? And then, we eat cake!"

  2. Be brief. The best advice for a prospective toaster is to keep it as concise as possible. While a detailed account of your friendship with the groom all the way from the sandbox through graduate school may be charming to you, the other guests want to drink and dance as soon as possible. Consider using a wedding quote to create a theme for your toast. A toast of even just a couple of heartfelt sentences is completely adequate. Speaking for two to three minutes should be the maximum—and plenty of time to say what you need to say.
    Example: “They say that birds of a feather flock together. Well, the two of you are the most graceful, odd, beautifully singing birds I’ve ever met, and I can’t wait to see you fly."

  3. Be complimentary... and appropriate. As funny as some anecdotes about the couple may seem to you, any comments that navigate choppy waters for other guests should simply be left out of a speech. That means keep it clean, and keep exes, your own ego and all stories of past embarrassments far, far away from the happy wedding day. Every word you say should be focused on making the couple smile with gratitude, so just stick to saying really nice things about them.
    Example: “I am lucky enough to have been with Jim through thick and thin... crust pizzas every night in college. As much as I hate knowing that Julia will take much better care of him than I did, I know it’s for the best. More pizza for me. I love you guys!"

  4. Be sincere. No matter what your personal style is, all anyone wants from a reception speech is to reiterate that this legal joining of the souls is a heartwarming event. That isn't to say that the attendees are looking to the toastmaster to offer some deep insights on love, but a nice reminder of the couple's suitability for each other is always welcome after a long ceremony. Speak from the heart, and the words will fall into place.
    Example: “To Katie and Dan—I’ve never met a more perfect couple, and I doubt I ever will. You bring out the best in each other... although, that is pretty easy to do."\

  5. Practice. There's nothing blasphemous about rehearsing your toast with someone else beforehand. If everyone you know is going to be attending and you're set on the element of surprise, record yourself with your phone or computer.

  6. Be clear-headed. The open bar doesn't need to be your pal until after the toast. While one drink can certainly calm the nerves, keep your own limits in mind and you'll be glad for it. It's probably not commonplace for you to speak to a captive audience of hundreds of people, so make the most of it by not slurring your words.

  7. Be mannerly. Don't forget to raise your glass during and to sip your champagne after your toast. Otherwise, it's just a regular old speech!

How to Shamelessly Self-Promote at Work

Sometimes, you have to toot your own horn.

We all know that one person at work. The one who never misses an opportunity to pump up his own work. “Did you see that I landed the Jennings account? Boom!” A braggart, a blowhard and annoyingly successful. Meanwhile, you keep your head down, work hard and keep the faith that your accomplishments will get noticed and you’ll get the recognition you deserve.

Unfortunately, unless you’re hoping to build up a stash of karma points, you’re not doing yourself any favors. Like it or not, promoting yourself at work is a necessary part of your career. You don’t have to be a blowhard like Jennings account guy, but you do need to be able to let your coworkers and your bosses know what you do, at what you’re best and what you accomplish in your job.

Here are some tips to help you promote yourself at work without annoying your entire office.

1. Change how you think about self-promotion.

If the very idea of self-promotion makes you cringe, you need to change your perception of self-promotion entirely. You probably think it means bragging and pumping yourself up above others. It doesn’t have to be like that. In fact, it shouldn’t be like that.

First, accept it as a part of your career. Just like the tasks you do on a day to day basis, promoting yourself is a necessity. Think of yourself as a great product. It doesn’t matter how amazing you are, if you don’t advertise to the right crowd, no one will know. If you think it’s your boss’s job to take note of who is kicking butt and performing at a high level, you’re kidding yourself. Your boss has a lot on his/her plate and a lot of employees to handle. They simply can’t see everything that goes on. In that light, you’re not bragging, you’re simply keeping your boss in the loop. Simple, right?

The Future: Your Reception Dream List

When you start building your list, jot down the names of everyone you could ever imagine attending your wedding, from old camp friends to that funny cousin you met once at a family reunion. Besides the wedding party who are those people that have been there for you or you look up to, or you've been there for? Just for this part, take your budget and venue out of the equation. You'll have to do some trimming later on, but right now, dream it out.




Don't sweat the big stuff and relax on the little things. There are plenty of wedding that seem to creep up on you, and you can get overwhelmed by them. The best advice I was once given was, "focus on the things that you truly want, and let the rest go."  Good advice I thought, and it is quite applicable to a variety of circumstances.
