What do I mean by saying "Better investment than a veggie platter!"?

Under the items that couples spend their money on is a huge list of must haves! Two of those items are the veggie platter and the DJ.

When you think of the cost of these two things, you might think the price difference to be quite significant.  Well, you just might be surprised at just how close they are in price.

Yet the function of one can make or break a wedding reception if done poorly.  And it's not the vegetables.

Several (non-alternative fact) polls suggest that the DJ is at the top of the list when it comes to making your reception an overall success! That sounds right to me. A good question to ask is, what are your guests going to remember the most;  The veggie platter or the entertainment?

Does a veggie platter share an equal importance to the success of your event as your wedding entertainment does?

Not so much.

I DJ'd a wedding, Saturday, April 28, 2018 that had 220 guests and it was a wonderful spread of food with drinks. The Bride and Groom were great and they had a wonderful evening with family and friends celebrating their union.

Using this wedding as an example of the amount of cost per person, let's do a little internet research.

After averaging out three different well known and often used catering companies in the Portland, Oregon area; I have concluded that a veggie platter for a wedding reception averages around $70. When you add other particulars to it then the costs escalate. Fruit, cheese, meat, ETC. For the purpose of this comparison I'm just talking veggies here.

So, for that particular wedding the costs come to about $4.50 per person.  For 220 people that is $990 for the vegetables during the cocktail "hour”.

That is without what most catering companies add-on, the mandatory 18% gratuity, which then bumps the total up to $1168.

For most weddings my five hour package deal is $895.

A bargain when you look at the costs of some items.

I am not saying skip the vegetable crudites, I am suggesting that you might reconsider your budget to suit your priorities...

YOUR entertainment!

Throughout the evening, a DJ who knows what his audience likes, takes the cue from your guests to channel the energy and preferences of the crowd, and – most importantly – creates a great atmosphere for you and your guests.

A skilled professional holds the energy, and thus the success, of the party in his or her hands, in the all-so-important category of wedding entertainment.

It takes time, experience, and training to be a great Disc Jockey.

Time equals piece of mind:

A professional wedding entertainment company will normally invest 14 to 20 hours on your special event when it may only appear that you are paying for your "4 - 6 hours" of entertainment at your event.

My favorite example is the image below...

No veggie platter I know of will produce this kind of reaction.

A survey conducted by The Knot: 2014 Average Wedding Budget Breakdown
Figures based on respondents who hired a professional vendor for the service.

Rates for the DJ industry vary greatly, ranging nationally from $350.00 to $3,500.00 with an average of $1,200.00 for a 4-5 hour reception.

In Portland, the DJ rates range from $300 - $2000 for a 4-5 hour wedding. Or per person at $2.40 - $16.00 for a guest count of 125.

The DJ, in many ways, is the leader of your wedding, so it’s best to invest as strongly as you can into this very present, energy-creating professional who can make your celebration unforgettable, and also provide the soundtrack for your day: your ceremony and on into your reception.

Your photographer captures your day, your DJ makes it your day.
